Transportation BenefitsPublic Transportation Pre-Tax PassSince parking at Lesley University is very limited, employees are strongly encouraged to use public transportation. To help defray the cost of public transportation, Lesley University (under the Transportation Equity Act) allows employees to pay for certain employment-related transportation expenses on a pre-tax basis. Examples of these include the purchase of MBTA passes and payment of parking lot fees associated with the commute to work. Contact Crosby Benefits to enroll in pre-tax deductions for public transportation expenses. Free parking is available at Alewife and Quincy Adams stations for those employees who use public transportation to and from work. Employees can reimbursed on a monthly basis by submitting eligible reciepts to Accounts Payable using an employee parking reimbursement request form [doc]. Anyone who is required to work approved overtime by his/her Supervisor is eligible for a guaranteed ride home. Please call Public Safety to arrange your ride at 617.349.8888.
Shuttle ServiceThe Lesley shuttle services all four campus locations (Doble Campus, Brattle Campus, Porter Campus, and the Art Institute of Boston Campus) and is available from September through May. There is no shuttle service on weekends, University observed holidays, student breaks, or during the summer semester (June through August). The schedule is subject to change. If you have any questions about shuttle service, please contact Public Safety. ParkingLesley University, in cooperation with the City of Cambridge, encourages employees to use public transportation, whenever possible. Since we are an urban campus, opportunities for parking at Lesley are extremely limited. Employees who are eligible for parking spaces pay a monthly fee through Payroll deduction. Parking permits are granted by the University on the express condition that the University is not responsible for any damage that occurs to a vehicle while parked on Lesley property. The Security Department manages all parking issues for faculty, students and staff at Lesley. Staff members are encouraged to coordinate any and all parking requests for special events (meetings, conferences etc.) in advance with the Public Safety. Special consideration will be provided to employees driving in carpools with more than two other employees. For further information about costs to park on campus, contact Public Safety at 617.349.8888, or your Human Resources Representative. Pre-Tax Transportation BenefitHow do I enroll in this benefit?Enrollment is now processed electronically through Crosby Benefits. Follow the online-ordering instructions [doc] to enroll in this benefit. What is a pre-tax transportation benefit? The Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century allows employers to offer a plan on a pre-tax basis through which employees may pay for certain employment-related transportation expenses. Examples of these expenses include the purchase of MBTA passes and payment of parking lot fees as part of commuting to work. How do I save with this benefit? Each month participating employees have dollars deducted from their paycheck, up to a limit set by the IRS, on a pre-tax basis to pay for passes, vouchers, and other qualified transportation expenses. Since these deductions are taken on a pre-tax basis you are saving taxes because you are not paying income or social security taxes on the wages used to purchasing transit or parking. The net effect is that you are buying your pass at a discounted price. Lesley University has contracted with the firm Crosby Benefits to assist in administering this benefit. They provide on-line enrollment, order and delivery of your pass and/or voucher directly to your home address. You may save up to 35% depending on your tax bracket, which might mean up to 3 free months of free transit or parking over the course of the year. Give me an example of how this works. * Please note that this benefit only applies to federal taxes. Massachusetts Department of Revenue does not adopt any part of the federal gross income exclusion for transit passes. As such any amounts elected for commuter passes will be subject to Massachusetts state taxes. Who is eligible for this benefit? How much may I set aside on a tax-free basis? *Note: The IRS may change the amount that is allowed to be tax-free on an annual basis. Because pre-tax transportation expenses are elected on a monthly basis, there is no "use it or lose it rule" similar to what is seen with our medical and dependent care flexible spending accounts (FSA's). With the pre-tax transportation benefit, you pay for your pass the month before you need it. Elected expenses are deducted from your paycheck on a monthly basis. What is considered a qualified Transit Expense?
What is a qualified parking expense? Are there commuting expenses not part of this plan? When may I enroll? What are the deadlines for enrolling or making changes to my account? How do I receive my pass, voucher, etc.? What if I don't receive my pass via the US Mail? What if I have questions? Lesley University reserves the right to change its benefit plans at any time, with timely notice to employees. updated 06/02/10 | 11:29 AM
