What are health services?
Student Health Service is an appointment-based clinic that is designed to manage acute episodic health problems, the flare-up of chronic problems and to meet your healthcare needs while you are here at Lesley University. Health Services is primarily staffed by nurse practitioners, a part-time physician, and an office manager who are dedicated to one objective: helping you maintain your health so that you can continue your education. They are there to provide you with care, treatment, information and advice about any health problems that develop. The service is always confidential. Please note: This service is separate from health insurance.
What kind of services does student health offer?

Can I get emergency contraception at SHS?
Yes, Plan B is available. This is best taken within 5 days of unprotected intercourse. IF it has been over 5 days, call SHS for consultation on birth control options.
Can I get birth control at Student Health Service?
Yes. A clinician will review family planning options with you. We can prescribe most types of birth control including pills. DMPA (shot), barrier (diaphragm) and Nuvaring (vaginal ring). Referrals can be made to a specialist for other methods such as IUDs or Implanon, if desired.
Can I get a gynecological exam at SHS?
Yes, annual gynecologic exams including pap smears as well as problem visits for issues such as vaginal infections and pelvic pain.
Can I get tested for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)?
If you are enrolled in our service both men and women may schedule an appointment for confidential STD testing. If you are not enrolled in our service, additional STD testing sites are available in the Cambridge/Boston area.
What lab work can be done at SHS during my visit?
We offer on-site pregnancy testing, urinalysis, rapid Strep, glucose and vaginal infection testing. Some results are available in 5-10 minutes. In addition to on-site lab work, tests are performed by Quest Diagnostics, a large local reference laboratory. If you do not wish to use your insurance for any reason, you will be given the option of being billed directly by the laboratory and will be fully responsible for the charge.
How long does it take to get my lab results?
Basic labs such as CBC or cholesterol screening are available within a few days. Specialized tests and cultures can take up to a week or more.
What other kinds of tests can I have done at SHS?
More advanced tests like x-rays, ultrasound's and EKGs can be ordered through local providers if further evaluation is required.
Is the health service open 24 hours?
No, the health service is not a 24 hour or on call facility, it is an appointment based clinic on campus.
When is the health service open?
The Student Health Service is open from September through May commencement, on the same schedule as the residence halls. For an up to date schedule, please refer to our hours of operations.
Where is the health service located?
The Health Service is located on the Lower Level of Mackenzie Hall, Main Campus, next to the mail room.
Do I need to make an appointment?
Yes, with our system of short term/same day/next day appointments, we have same-day appointments available as well as options for the next day. Students are offered the next available time slots to accommodate their schedules. For optimal scheduling options, students are encouraged to call as early as possible to be seen on the same day.
How do I make an appointment?
You simply call the main number 617.349.8222 to schedule an appointment. Office visits are generally by appointment, same day appointments are available at the start of each day for urgent care needs. Students are offered the next available time slots to accommodate their schedules. For optimal scheduling options, students are encouraged to call as early as possible to be seen on the same day.
How long do I have to wait for an appointment?
With our system of short term/same day/next day appointments, we have same-day appointments available as well as options for the next day. We block time every day for urgent care issues. Non-urgent or routine problem, may be offered an appointment for the next day. For optimal scheduling options, students are encouraged to call as early as possible to be seen on the same day.
Is there anything I need to bring to my first appointment?
Yes, you should bring your health insurance card. A copy of your card is kept on file in the event you require labs such as throat cultures, blood tests, or urine tests. These tests are performed by Quest Diagnostics, a large local reference laboratory. Note: Students should always carry their insurance cards with them.
What do I do if I am sick, it is after hours or I am not eligible for the student health service?
In the event of an emergency while on campus, students should contact their Community Advisor or Campus Security (617.349.8888 or 617.491.4444). In life-threatening situations, students should call 911 for an ambulance, then call Campus Security so they can assist the ambulance in finding the student. Campus Security also has a first aid kit and defibrillators available. For non emergency, if it is after hours, or you are not eligible for services, please consider off-campus medical options.
If I have the Lesley University Student Health Insurance plan, am I automatically enrolled in the student health service?
No, you are not automatically enrolled because the Lesley Health Service is NOT student health insurance. Lesley Health Service and student health insurance are two separate entities.
Who can access the Student Health Service?
Student Health Service provides basic primary health care services to full-time undergraduate students of Lesley University and the Threshold program. Enrollment is automatic for resident students and optional for full-time undergraduate students living off-campus. If you are an undergraduate commuter and wish to enroll in the service you may complete a contract during the first three weeks of each semester: Optional Student Health Service Contract.
Who cannot access the Student Health Service?
Student Health does not offer services for the following programs: Lesley Center for the Adult Learner, Graduate/PhD Programs, or staff. If you are not eligible for services, please consider off-campus medical options.
Do I pay a fee for student health service?
Yes, The $400 per semester charge is a non-refundable fee that is charged to your student account.
Will Student Health Service (SHS) bill my parents, my insurance or me?
There is no charge for visits at SHS. However, students will usually use their health insurance to pay for laboratory tests obtained at the Student Health Service, such as throat cultures, blood tests, or urine tests. These tests are performed by Quest Diagnostics, a large local reference laboratory. If the student does not wish to use his/her insurance for any reason, they will be given the option of being billed directly by the laboratory and will be fully responsible for the charge.
Do I have the option to waive the student health fee?
If you are a resident undergraduate, you are automatically enrolled and do NOT have the option to waive the health service fee.
Are there additional fees, if I use the health service?
No, there are no additional fees; however, your insurance is billed in the event you require labs such as throat cultures, blood tests, or urine test. Tests are performed by Quest Diagnostics, a large local reference laboratory. If you do not wish to use your insurance for any reason, you will be given the option of being billed directly by the laboratory and will be fully responsible for the charge.
Are my records confidential?
Medical confidentiality is assured for all care and services at SHS, except in cases where the safety of the student or others is at risk, or as required by law (such as mandated reporting of certain infectious diseases and abuse). This means that no detailed information will be transmitted to others without the student's written consent or direction, except as noted above. The Student Health Form information may be shared with appropriate University personnel on a need to know basis. All Patient information is held in strict confidence according to FERPA guidelines. A confidential medical record is established and maintained for every patient. Records well be released only with a student's signed written request. Record requests are processed in the order received and generally require five to seven business days to complete.
How do I get my medical record from (SHS) Student Health Service?
A student can request their medical records be sent from or to SHS after completing a consent form for records release. Consent forms are available on our forms page and at the office. Record requests are processed in the order received and generally require 5-7 business days.
How do I get my immunization record from (SHS) Student Health Service?
A student may request their immunization record by completing the Immunization Disclosure Form. Students must provide the following information: contact information, graduation year, whether the student was a resident or commuter, and complete fax number and/or mailing address. Records requests are processed in the order received and generally require 5-7 business days for record archival.
What do I do if I miss class because of illness?
The Lesley University Student Health Service does not provide routine "sick notes" to students for professors due to brief absences from class because of illness or fatigue. We encourage students to discuss absences directly with their professors. This is meant to foster mature communication between student and professor, as well as personal responsibility for class attendance decisions. Please refer to our Sick Note Policy.
