Intercultural Relations

The Internship

An internship is required for both the M.A. and the C.A.G.S. programs. Daily work in an internship setting provides an opportunity for continued practical application of the conceptual frameworks and competencies developed in the coursework. The internship is an experience in which the intern is able to expand skills, to contribute to the goals of the sponsoring organization, and and to cultivate relationships with other professionals in the field.

The setting of the internship should reflect the professional interests, skills, goals, and previous experiences of the student. Given the diversity of interests and directions students bring to the program, internship possibilities cover many types of organizations in various parts of the world. For international students, and those who have experience living in another culture for an extended period of time, an internship in the United States may be most appropriate. For those who have never lived abroad for an extended period of time, an internship outside the United States is often desirable.

Under the guidance of the academic advisor, students utilize the program resources and networks and work to secure an appropriate internship. An Internship Manual with further details is available from the Intercultural Relations Program Office.
