Nancy Waring

Nancy earned a bachelor's degree magna cum laude in English from Tufts University and a Master's and a Ph.D. in English from Cornell University. She has been a writer, editor, and teacher of writing in a variety of academic and editorial settings for over 25 years. She has taught writing and literature at Boston University, Cornell University, Lesley, and elsewhere. Her interests are wide-ranging and interdisciplinary and include literature, especially 19th and 20th century English and American literature; mind/body matters and complementary and alternative medicine; allopathic (western medicine), particularly brain science and the history of medicine; Buddhism; and women in conflict with the law. She has extensive training in Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction. Her career has spanned academia and journalism; she has been editor in chief of the Harvard Law Bulletin and deputy executive editor of Hippocrates, a primary care journal for physicians, where she contributed feature articles on many leaders in mind/body and complementary and alternative medicine. She has also written a book for lay readers about asthma. She has been a frequent contributor to the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine and written for numerous other publications, including The Village Voice, Natural Health, and Women and Crime, focusing on health and social justice issues. She is currently writing a memoir. In 1994 she helped found a home in Cambridge for formerly homeless women with HIV/AIDS, where she facilitates a weekly support group. She has received several awards recognizing her HIV/AIDS work.
