Karen Frostig, Ph.D. is a visual artist, author, art therapist, art educator and social activist, engaged in research concerning issues of art and genocide. She holds an appointment as a Visiting Scholar in the Scholars Program at the Women Studies Research Center at Brandeis University. She exhibits her work extensively across the US and in Europe, and is a frequent presenter at national and international conferences. Dr. Frostig is also a recipient of several Massachusetts Cultural Council grants, a Puffin Foundation grant, Lesley University faculty development grants and multiple GSASS research fellowships. Book publications include co-editor (2007) for Blaze: Discourse on Art, Women and Feminism, published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing (UK); co-author (1998) of Expressive Arts Therapies in Schools, published by Charles C. Thomas, Publisher, and a second edition translation into Korean, published by Sigma Press (2007); an essay in work, pedagogy and change edited by L. Beudert (2006); and an essay in the forthcoming text: G.L.O.B.A.L.I.Z.A.T.I.O.N., Art and Education, as well as numerous journal publications. Dr. Frostig co-chaired the 2006 Annual Women's Caucus for Art (WCA) National Conference, and chaired the panel program, assembling 16 panels and 70 speakers. She is former co-president of the Boston chapter of the WCA (2006-2008) and a national board member (2006-2009); and is presently regional coordinator of The Feminist Art Project. Teaching courses related to Visual Culture, Frostig's teaching philosophy is grounded in feminist pedagogy and constructivist theory, emphasizing student-centered models of investigation: "In my coursework, I help students to become reflective thinkers, engaged in complex problem-solving about a wide variety of ideas. Working within a collaborative model, I join students in an honest and compassionate search for issues that energize the artistic process." Dr. Frostig is an Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Social Sciences at Lesley University and served as CAL's Partnership, Coordinator (2005-08); and as Placement Coordinator for Art Education (2003-05).
