Division of Counseling and PsychologySince their founding in 1975, Lesley's graduate programs in Counseling and Psychology have advanced a philosophy of education grounded in a strong foundation of psychology-based, rigorous theoretical study; an emphasis on field experience in a variety of professional settings; and the personal development of each student as a reflective practitioner.
This philosophy, with its integrative holistic approach to training in counseling and psychology, its footing in reality and its emphasis on the student's personal development, has given Lesley a unique and highly regarded position in graduate education. The Division of Counseling and Psychology offers school guidance counseling and school adjustment counseling master's degree programs approved by the Massachusetts Department of Education (leading to initial licensure). The M.A. in Counseling Psychology programs are accredited by the Masters in Psychology Accreditation Council (MPAC). The curriculum is always evolving, designed to prepare graduates who demonstrate an in-depth awareness of, and concern for, the human condition. Courses address emerging issues, cultural trends and societal problems to prepare students to meet professional challenges in the coming decades and to serve the great diversity of people with whom they will work. The programs prepare clinicians in the field of counseling and psychology at the Master's Degree and Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study levels. In addition, Certificate Programs are offered at the post-baccalaureate and post-master's levels. Students work closely with a faculty of scholar-practitioners who have achieved leadership roles in their professions. Through academic study in counseling and professional psychology, and supervised field-based learning, students are trained to work with children, adolescents, adults, families, groups, and organizations. Learning is seen as an on-going process that incorporates both cognitive and affective dimensions. Students develop knowledge in the field of Counseling Psychology, skills of critical analysis and intervention, and an understanding of both the relational aspects of psychological intervention and the socio-cultural contexts of individuals and human problems. Coursework and clinical training foster self-awareness and an understanding of ethical and professional guidelines for practice. updated 09/28/06 | 04:05 PM
