Activity: Live Classroom Debates

Students will use the (provided) list of websites to research and participate in a debate on the statement:

 

Because of the huge population in the United States, my vote makes no difference; therefore, voting is a waste of time.

Procedure for preparing for the debate

 

1. Draw a pro or con card from a hat
2. Join a group of four students who are arguing the same side
3. Visit websites to gather information for the debate
4. Prepare a minimum of three arguments to use in the debate
5. Develop a list of quotes that will aid the group in emphasizing the main points
6. Write an introduction statement and a concluding statement

The topic will be debated three times over a three-day period with different groups participating in each debate.
