Dr. Kirby presented a day long pre-conference course at the American Art Therapy Association annual conference in 2010 on Art Therapy and Sexuality. She has also presented as a member of a panel on gender issues in art therapy.
Recently, Dr. Kirby has also presented on exploring body casting as a vehicle for healing and social transformation with former undergraduate art therapy students at both the American Art Therapy Association as well as the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association conferences.
Dr. Michaela Kirby is a board certified/registered art therapist and a licensed psychologist. Since 2006, she has been one of the core faculty in the graduate Expressive Therapies Division and was the Coordinator of the undergraduate art therapy program from 2000-2006.As faculty in the graduate program, Dr. Kirby teaches in both the graduate and doctoral program.
Dr. Kirby has been active in the American Art Therapy Association for many years and is currently serving on the Educational Program Approval Board, which reviews and approves graduate art therapy programs for the association.
Dr. Kirby also maintains a private practice in Somerville. She has over 20 years of clinical experience in a variety of settings including residential schools for adolescents, public schools, a college counseling center, day treatment, in-patient, and out-patient settings. Areas of specialization include sandplay, neuropsychology, sexuality and gender issues, autism and developmental delays, adolescence, and women with ADHD.
Dr. Kirby also maintains an art studio and has also been exploring bodycasting as a vehicle for healing.
