Fun Facts:
I grew up in Northern New Jersey; My father was an optical engineer with the ability to measure the weight of ink on a dollar bill; My son Enzo is named after Enzo Ferrari
My teaching is based on graphic design educator Philip Meggs’s conception of form having a “dual existence,” an “optical phenomenon with visual properties, [with] a communicative signal.” I use this dual existence to support my students in connecting their thinking and making to:
- understand content through its dual properties, a strategy I used as a struggling learner in traditional educational settings;
- develop and use specific visible design literacies, such as spatial hierarchy, to communicate ideas;
- process and present ideas in their own unique voices;
- comprehend the perceptions and understandings of the audiences they want to reach; and
- balance their intellect and intuition to make meaning through the design process.
My wide range of students includes young people in a variety of K-12 settings; undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students in the university; and practicing teachers in all content areas.
