Fun Facts: My favorite cartoonists are Mort Drucker, Pat Oliphant, and Hayao Miyazaki; I ride a geeky bike—with baskets; I’m a documentary movie addict; Two of my favorite feature films are On the Waterfront and Lawrence of Arabia; I think Kathy Griffin is hilarious; I’m a horable speller.
As an early art student, I had no shortage of passion, but I found the art world incomprehensible. Not particularly career focused, I was enthralled with the magical abilities of my favorite artists. They were my Jedi Knights, and I wanted to know their secrets. But my years in art school gave me more than I originally planned. They shaped me into a cultured person. Beyond the youthful desire to stretch my abilities, I began to see art as way of thinking about the world, and a means by which to participate with it.
Every student’s path is different. Teachers differ also. Some teach through fear, others with tender encouragement. My approach is to be as practical as
possible—to share what I know and believe, and then do my best to stay out of the way.
