Dr. Ribeiro's teaching and research have been focused on analyzing intercultural communication within different domains. A key interdisciplinary project has been on Brazilian Immigrant Women: analyzing their needs and expectations in clinical settings. The results of this research have been published in the U.S. and internationally. Another focus has been on doctor-patient communication in psychiatric settings, where Dr. Ribeiro holds a position of Associate Researcher at the Institute of Psychiatry of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. And most recently, some of her interests have also embraced the area of "new media" − a general term that can be applied to how technology mediates interpersonal communication. She has been analyzing differences between “mediated intercultural communication” and “intercultural face to face communication.”
