Online Seminars

Online and Hybrid Course Design Seminar
Fully Online Class via myLesley - 4 weeks, Requiring 6-8 hours/week
January 30 - February 26

This online seminar is for faculty who are designing an online or hybrid course. You will redesign a specific face-to-face course to one of these two formats. Key topics we will discuss include pedagogical issues impacting course design, the development of interactive learning activities, integration of online and face-to-face components, and assessment. By the end of the seminar, you will have developed a design plan for your course and a prototype for a course module. This is a starting point for course development - after completion of the seminar, we will continue to provide ongoing support to complete the course. Prior to taking this seminar, you should be comfortable with basic skills in myLesley (Blackboard), such as navigating a course site and posting to a discussion board.

All activities in this course will take place asynchronously in myLesley.

Teaching Online and Hybrid Courses Seminar
Fully Online Class via myLesley - 2 weeks, Requiring 2-4 hours/week
February 6 - February 19

Are you preparing to teach a developed online or hybrid course? This seminar will introduce you to basic considerations when preparing to teach hybrid and online courses. Key topics include best practices in effective hybrid and online teaching, developing a teaching presence in the online environment, and time and workload management. Prior to taking this seminar, you should be comfortable with basic skills in myLesley (Blackboard), such as navigating a course site and posting to a discussion board. your final project in this course will be a script for an introduction to your course and a facilitation guide.

All activities in this course will take place asynchronously in myLesley.

Adding Voice to Your myLesley Course
Fully Online Class via myLesley (BB 9.1) - 2 weeks, Requiring 2-4 hours/week
March 5 - March 18

Have you wondered how you can include more of your own voice in the web materials for your course? This seminar will help you explore strategies for adding audio to your myLesley course. We will explore pedagogical reasons for adding your own voice to your course materials. You will also plan, storyboard, and script an audio presentation, choosing one authoring tool most appropriate for your instructional objective. Authoring tools used in this course might be Audacity, VoiceThread, or our new Blackboard Voice tools. Your final project will be to create a short audio presentation to use in your course.

All activities in this course will take place asynchronously in the new version of myLesley (BB 9.1). Participants should be familiar with basic navigation in myLesley and posting to a discussion board.

Locating Podcasting and Blogging Resources
Fully Online Class via myLesley (BB 9.1) - 1 week, Requiring 2-4 hours
March 19 - March 25

There is a wealth of helpful information and resources produced on a daily and weekly basis through blogs and podcasts. This seminar will help you identify podcasting and blogging resources appropriate for your subject area. Topics covered in this seminar will include:
      • What is RSS and how can it help you manage content?
      • What are strategies for locating RSS content?
      • How can you evaluate effective blog or podcast content?
By the end of the seminar you will have identified at least one podcast and one blog relevant to your teaching or research interests.

All activities in this course will take place asynchronously in the new version of myLesley (BB 9.1). Participants should be familiar with basic navigation in myLesley and posting to a discussion board.

Using Group Work for Student Collaboration in myLesley
Fully Online Class via myLesley (BB 9.1) - 2 weeks, Requiring 2-4 hours/week
March 26 - April 8

This seminar will help you design group activities in your myLesley course. We will identify strategies for designing and scaffolding group work through available tools. You will design a series of learning activities, tied to your course's learning objectives, that require students to work collaboratively (either completely online or across face-to-face and online activities). We will provide resources for structuring and assessing these activities. Tools explored in this seminar may include Group areas and discussions, wikis, blogs, VoiceThread, and/or Webspiration.

All activities in this course will take place asynchronously in the new version of myLesley (BB 9.1). Participants should be familiar with basic navigation in myLesley and posting to a discussion board.

Building Reflective Practice and Inquiry with Blogs and Journals
Fully Online Class via myLesley (BB 9.1) - 2 weeks, Requiring 2-4 hours/week
April 16 - April 29

Are you looking for strategies to encourage students to engage in reflective activities? This seminar will assist you in designing, supporting, and assessing reflective student learning activities in your myLesley course. We'll look at strategies for integrating student reflection into your course design via journaling, blogging, or reflective discussion questions. By the end of the seminar, you will have identified a learning sequence that threads throughout your course and encourages student reflection on their learning. You will also develop a rubric that assesses learning in the activity.

All activities in this course will take place asynchronously in the new version of myLesley (BB 9.1). Participants should be familiar with basic navigation in myLesley and posting to a discussion board.

Designing Instructional Materials for Mobile Learning
Fully Online Class via myLesley (BB 9.1) - 2 weeks, Requiring 2-4 hours/week
May 7 - May 20

Are you curious how to design visually effective course materials with the mobile learning environment in mind? This seminar will introduce you to basic visual design principles for instructional content on mobile interfaces. By the end of this seminar, you will have revised an existing PowerPoint presentation for the "small screen."

All activities in this course will take place asynchronously in the new version of myLesley (BB 9.1). Participants should be familiar with basic navigation in myLesley and should have a prepared PowerPoint presentation from their course to work with in this seminar.

Atomic Learning provides one to three minute video tutorials on the most commonly used software applications, including the Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe products, and more. myLesley 101 Skills Development
Fully Online Self-Paced Class via myLesley

The myLesley 101 skills development course is an online, self-study course about the basics of using myLesley. myLesley 101 provides guides and tutorials on how to set up a new course and ways to enhance existing courses. Whether you are using myLesley for the first time or the 100th time, myLesley 101 provides you with relevant materials. Some highlights include uploading files such as a syllabus to your course, linking to outside websites, discussion board overview, Grade Center options and customizing the look and feel of your course.

This online course is self-paced, allowing you the flexibility in selecting the topics you would like to focus on, as well as how frequently you wish to access the materials.

eLIS Apps Connection

Are you interested in finding more apps for your iPad or iPhone? Join your colleagues at the eLIS Apps Connection and share your favorites. Don't have an iPad or iPhone but are curious? Come see what the fuss is all about! This is not a presentation but a loosely facilitated opportunity to explore what others have found valuable. Each month we will meet to share different types of apps. February's session will focus on apps for creating art.
