TEACHER CERTIFICATION FOR EDUCATORS in VIRGINIA
Added endorsements in Virginia are available through the following three options:
Option 1. Completing the courses for an additional major in the new area with specific requirements met;
Option 2. Completing the requirements for a designated add-on endorsement (Driver Education, Gifted Education, Algebra I, etc.) In some endorsement areas (science, foreign language), the addition of related endorsements is allowed through completing specific abbreviated requirements from within the content area.
Option 3. A passing score on a Praxis II Specialty Area Test in an area for which Virginia requires a Praxis II test (except Elementary Education). This option requires that the individual already hold a full endorsement on a valid license.
If the individual holds a Provisional License, the Praxis II assessment for their original endorsement must be completed before additional endorsements can be added through testing. This route is not an option for areas that do not require a Praxis II assessment (Special Education, ESL, Latin, etc.) This route is not an option for the elementary education endorsement (PK-3 or PK-6).
Endorsement Earned Through Direct Application
Lesley University may help you obtain an endorsement in the area listed below by successfully completing a corresponding Lesley program, which is through Option 2 listed above. Applicants should submit official transcripts and application to the Virginia educator licensing office.
English as a Second Language (K-12) - Student should complete full 18-credit TESOL program, as well as six semester hours in modern foreign languages.
Endorsement Earned Through Content Testing
The Lesley programs listed below will help you prepare for the Praxis II Specialty Area Test in Option 3, and more importantly, to be a confident and effective educator.
Please note it is important that students interested in earning an endorsement through this route contact the Virginia Department of Education prior to registration to ensure that you are informed of the certification requirements needed to receive an endorsement. Should you have additional questions on your educator license, contact the Virginia Department of Education.
