TEACHER CERTIFICATION FOR EDUCATORS in NEW YORK
Holders of most New York State certificates may qualify for an additional
certificate without meeting all of the requirements that a first-time applicant
must meet. Holders of a valid base New York State Education Department (NYSED)
certificate would apply for a Classroom Teacher Extension.
A complete
listing of New York classroom teacher extensions and requirements needed to
receive an extension in a subject area may be found by visiting NYSED.gov.
There are various types
of teaching certificates for a New York educator:
Initial
Certificate: The entry-level certificate for classroom teachers,
issued in specific subject/grade titles, and the entry-level certificate for
School Building Leader (SBL). This certificate is valid for 5 years and leads
to Professional Certificate.
Professional Certificate:
The advanced-level certificate for classroom teachers (issued in specific
subject/grade titles) and School Building Leaders. It is continuously valid
with completion of required professional development hours on a five-year
professional development cycle.
Extension (subject):
Certificate attached to a regular base certificate, authorizing the holder to
teach an additional student population, grade, or subject not authorized by the
base certificate. Extensions are not free-standing; they may be attached to
multiple base certificates and are valid as long as the base certificate remains
valid.
Provisional Certificate: The entry-level
certificate for pupil personnel professionals, issued in specific subject/grade
titles is valid for 5 years and leads to Permanent Certificate.
Permanent Certificate: The advanced-level certificate for pupil personnel
professionals. The Permanent certificate also remains the advanced-level
certificate for classroom teachers and school administrators who hold a valid
Provisional certificate. This certificate is valid for life, unless revoked for
cause by the NYSED.
Should you have additional questions on educator
certification, contact the New
York State Education Department.
Authorization and Teacher/Educator Licensure in New York
Authorization: Lesley University is not required to seek
authorization to operate in New York based on Lesley's current activity within
this state, as determined by the New York State Department of Education.
Teacher/Educator Licensure: Higher education authorization and teacher
certification approval are separate entities. For more information on teaching
certificates, visit the
New York State Education Department.
