TEACHER CERTIFICATION FOR EDUCATORS in NEW MEXICO
An endorsement is attached to a teaching license to specify the teaching field in which a teacher may teach as authorized by the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED). Endorsements are added to all teaching licenses, EXCEPT the four core subject areas of language arts, mathematics, science, history, which cannot be added to an early childhood, elementary or special education teaching license.
An early childhood (B-3), elementary (K-8), and special education teacher (K-12) will continue to be authorized to teach in a self-contained classroom or in any of the core subject areas of: language arts, mathematics, science, or history, geography, economics, civics, and government in a departmentalized program without a separate endorsement in those areas. However, those teaching at the middle level with an elementary or special education license or in special education at the high school level must be "highly qualified" in the content areas being taught.
Endorsement Earned Through Direct Application or Testing
An educator may obtain a New Mexico endorsement in the areas listed below by successfully completing the corresponding Lesley program. Applicants should submit for review all official transcripts and application to the New Mexico Public Education Department.
Middle Level Math - Students must earn 24-36 semester hours in mathematics (12 of the hours must be upper division credit if adding the endorsement to a secondary or PreK-12 specialty license). NOTE: This endorsement will not be added to an early childhood, elementary or special education license.
Middle Level Science - Students must earn 24-36 semester hours in science (12 of the hours must be upper division credit if adding the endorsement to a secondary or PreK-12 specialty license). NOTE: This endorsement will not be added to an early childhood, elementary or special education license.
Information Technology Coordinator - Students should complete the full master's degree program in Educational Technology.
TESOL - Students should complete full 18-credit TESOL program, as well as six (6) required credits in a foreign language. Passing score on the TESOL Content Knowledge Assessment is also required.
Please note it is important that students interested in earning an endorsement through Lesley programs contact the New Mexico Public Education Department prior to registration to ensure that you are informed of the certification requirements needed to receive an endorsement. Should you have additional questions regarding your teaching license, contact the New Mexico Public Education Department.
