 TEACHER CERTIFICATION FOR EDUCATORS IN MASSACHUSETTS 

Are you a current educator in Massachusetts and interested in learning more about the process to add a level or an additional field to your teaching license? If so, read more to help guide you through the process.

 Types of Licenses
Initial License is valid for 5 years of employment and may be extended one time for 5 additional years of employment. This license requires:

• a Bachelor's Degree
• passing score(s) on MTEL 
• completion of an approved Educator Preparation Program

 Professional License is valid for 5 calendar years. This license requires:

• 3 Years of employment under an Initial License
• completion of a Teacher Induction Program
• one of the options for the Professional License

 Education Requirements for a Professional License (Choose One)
The focus of this requirement is on content-based coursework, not pedagogy or methods coursework, unless pedagogy is listed in the subject matter knowledge requirements. Subject matter knowledge regulations for three generalist licenses may be found via the links: Moderate Disabilities (PreK-8) | Early Childhood Education | Elementary Education.

• Completion of a master's degree program approved for Professional license (Lesley offers many programs); or
• Completion of a master's degree program in the academic discipline of the license (primarily for middle and high school subjects--e.g. English, Biology, History, etc.); or
• Twelve Credit Option (details below): For those who are planning to take a Master’s degree, are currently enrolled in a Master’s degree, or already hold a Master's degree, completion of 12 credits of graduate level courses in the content or subject matter knowledge of the license.

• These may include credits earned prior to the application for the license, including credits taken for an Initial license master's program, or another master's program that were related to content, not pedagogy.
• The content or subject matter knowledge for each license is posted on the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's website under section 7.06 of the regulations 603 CMR 7.00. www.doe.mass.edu/lawsregs/603cmr7.html?section=06. Candidates should familiarize themselves with this when considering coursework that will advance the Initial license to Professional.
• Candidates can ask for coursework to be pre-approved by applying for the Professional license and then sending official course descriptions to the Department (ESE). Sample letter for course content pre-approval.

Shown below is a selection of content courses in a number of subject areas that may be taken at Lesley University. Be sure to check with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education prior to starting your coursework to ensure the courses will be accepted for professional licensure.

 Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (grades K-12): EECLD 6002 | EECLD 6001 | EECLD 6004 | EECLD 6007 | EECLD 6010 | EECLD 6012. Twelve credits in this subject area may lead to a Professional license in Elementary Education or Moderate Disabilities.
