TEACHER CERTIFICATION FOR EDUCATORS in ALABAMA
Are you a current educator and interested in learning more about the process to add a level or an additional field to your teaching license? If so, read more.
Levels of Professional Educator Certificates:
- Class B: leads to an initial Professional Educator Certificate at the Bachelor’s degree level.
- Class A: leads to an initial Professional Educator Certificate at the Master’s degree level or a Professional Educator Certificate at the Master’s degree level if applicant already holds a Class B in-field teaching certificate.
- Class AA: Planned sixth-year program of at least 30 semester hours of graduate credit not used for prior level certification in the same teaching field or area of instructional support which may result in an education specialist degree.
If an educator seeks a Class A License, the advanced degree program must be a state-approved program in the teaching field in which the Class B License is held and if it is not, the certificate is considered an additional certificate to the applicant's license.
If an educator seeks a Class AA License, the education specialist degree must be a state-approved program in the teaching field in which the Class A License is held.
Definition of state-approved: Programs approved by any state outside of Alabama or a teacher education program at an Alabama institution of higher education that has been formally approved by the Alabama State Board of Education. An applicant who completes a state-approved program must be recommended for certification by the institution where the program was completed. Should you have additional questions regarding your teaching certificate, contact the Alabama Department of Education.
