Teaching Struggling Readers in Small Groups Grades 3-8

Learn about key areas of difficulty that are evident in intermediate and middle school readers who are reading below grade level expectations. Help your students meet the common core standards and improve their performance on standardized tests.  Meeting students at their instructional reading level with expert teaching that helps them climb the ladder of text difficulty and improve their ability to read texts for other content area subjects.

You will learn key teaching strategies that you can use in small group teaching to facilitate student learning as they read short fiction and nonfiction books. You will also learn how to consider the role of text selection, all aspects of deep comprehension, vocabulary and language support in making it easier for struggling students to learn.  The critical role of fluency and efficient word analysis will also be addressed.

Dr. Irene Fountas directs a comprehensive school improvement project in the School of Education at Lesley University. She has been a classroom teacher, language arts specialist and consultant in school districts across the nation and abroad and has received numerous awards for her contributions to literacy. Irene and co-author Gay Su Pinnell have published several books with Heinemann, including Guiding Readers and Writers: Teaching Comprehension, Genre and Content Literacy (Heinemann, 2000), Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency: Thinking, Talking, and Writing about Reading (Grades K-8) (Heinemann, 2006) and The Continuum of Literacy Learning, Grades PK-8: Behaviors and Understandings to Notice, Teach and Support (Heinemann, 2009).
