In-depth professional development for Staff Developers & Literacy Coaches

This four-week training is designed to help literacy leaders provide high-quality professional development in their schools or districts. It combines best practice literacy teaching, assessment and analysis of student progress to inform instruction and an introduction to literacy coaching.

Effective Literacy Teaching

  • Implementing Reading & Writing Workshop
  • Using the Six Trait Writing Rubric
  • Using Benchmark Assessments
  • Guided Reading as Part of the Literacy Program
  • Expanding Oral Language Development
  • Using Leveled Books for Assessing Reading
  • Teaching of Phonics & Word Study
  • Using Evidence to Show Change Over Time in Literacy Learning

  • The Role of the Coach in the School
  • Coaching Teachers Effectively
  • Supporting Teachers in the Implementation of Reading & Writing Workshop
  • Helping Teachers Use Leveled Books
  • Supporting the Needs of Students in Guided Reading Lessons
  • Using Language to Support Collegial Inquiry
  • Working with Teachers to Improve Student Achievement

As part of this training you will also receive 20 hours of professional development designed by our faculty and Irene Fountas to use with your teachers!

Meet out Literacy Leaders K-6 Faculty

Kathy HaKathy Ha is our primary Literacy Leaders K-6 trainer. Kathy has been a faculty member at the Center for Reading Recovery and Literacy Collaborative for three years. Prior to that she worked as primary literacy coordinator in the Lowell Public Schools as well as a classroom teacher and transitional Spanish bilingual teacher. 

Toni CzekanskiToni Czekanski is our intermediate Literacy Leaders K-6 trainer. Toni has been a faculty member at the Center for Reading Recovery and Literacy Collaborative for eight years. Prior to that she worked as a Reading Recovery teacher, a classroom teacher at both the primary and intermediate levels, as a reading specialist and has developed programs for teaching gifted and talented students.

Cost:

Training Fee: $4,000
Materials Fee: $750
(Fee includes a collection of professional books, one complete Benchmark Assessment System--Primary or Intermediate--from Fountas & Pinnell and A Continuum of Literacy Learning, ountas & Pinnell, 2007.)
