Gay Su Pinnell, Professor and Author, The Ohio State University
Gay Su Pinnell is a professor in the School of Teaching and Learning at The Ohio State University. Her professional work focuses on literacy education of children and on ways to support teachers of reading, writing, and language arts. Pinnell has written many articles and has received several prestigious awards for her work. Pinnell has co-authored numerous books and articles related to language and literacy teaching with Irene Fountas. Their latest publications are the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System, Grades K-8 and The Continuum of Literacy Learning, Grades K-8: Behaviors and Understandings to Notice, Teach, and Support.
Irene C. Fountas, Professor and Author, Lesley University
Irene Fountas is a professor in the School of Education at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts where she directs research-based literacy projects. She has been a classroom teacher, language arts specialist, and consultant in school districts across the nation and abroad. A recipient of several awards for her contributions to literacy, Fountas has co-authored numerous books and articles related to language and literacy teaching with Gay Su Pinnell. Their latest publications are the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System, Grades K-8 and The Continuum of Literacy Learning, Grades K-8: Behaviors and Understandings to Notice, Teach, and Support.
Brian Heinz, Award-Winning Children's Author
Brian Heinz has taught language arts to students ranging from elementary school through college level. Since childhood, he has been drawn to the natural world and while growing up, he read many nonfiction books about animals. As an adult, Heinz also taught science and instilled in students the excitement for the discovery and love of nature he has always felt. Heinz has authored over a dozen books, most of which are about wild animals and their unique ability to survive in harsh environments. Publications include Red Fox at McCloskey's Farm; Cheyenne Medicine Hat; Kayuktuk: An Arctic Quest; and The Wolves.
Institute Description
Learn how to analyze students' work and support their writing development from emergent to self-extending. Focus on a variety of writing for different purposes and audiences across the year through a study of grade level competencies. Discover how to help your students learn to write effectively by studying the ways writers use craft and conventions in the writing process.
Topics and activities include:
- Interactive breakout sessions, grouped by grade level
- Exploring how we think about writing
- Examining children's writing samples
- Concrete strategies, models, and skills for organizing ideas, writing, revising, and editing for fiction and nonfiction pieces
- Specific approaches tailored to primary, intermediate, and middle-school educators
- In-depth keynotes by literacy experts and authors

Non-credit fee (online registration): $550 (24 PDPs)
Credit Options: 2 or 3 credits
Credit Fee: $765/credit plus $30 registration fee
- 2 Credits =$1,530 (45 PDPs) plus $30 registration fee
- 3 Credits = $2,295 (67.5 PDPs) plus $30 registration fee
Registering for Graduate Credit
Those registering for credit must do so via the Lesley University registrar. Students registering for credit may do so from March 17, 2008.
