Training and development certificate program

Course Descriptions

Introduction to Training and Development*
Students will explore how adults acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Learning theory and instructional theory are discussed in the context of individual differences in learning, and how and where formal training and development programs fit into the adult learner's life. Using reading assignments and group projects, students review the historical, current, and future states of the training profession, and investigate training models, trainer competencies, organization dynamics, and career paths for training professionals.

Consultation and Assessment
Understanding the environment and identifying the learning and performance practices of an organization are crucial skills in the training and development process. The course provides an overview of the consultation process, including the client/consultant relationship, and the role and required capabilities of the consultant. Applied learning is enhanced through the practical experience of student project teams that address key issues in their work environments.

Program Design and Development
Most practitioners spend the largest share of their time designing and developing training programs. Focus is placed on identifying a learning opportunity and gaining organization support. Program design requirements will be emphasized, including the development of the project/curriculum objectives, training methodology, return on investment assessment, and implementation plan.

Media and Technology
Increasing reliance on information technologies in society and the workplace makes it essential for trainers to develop "information literacy" skills, including the ability to access, select, create, and communicate information. Students will become familiar with a range of available software programs such as simulations, multimedia resources, databases, and computer-assisted learning modules. Special attention is given to the interpretation of theories of learning, and the ways in which the various types of media and technology can support them.

Evaluation
Program/curriculum evaluation provides a systemic approach to setting goals, determining how those goals will be met, and identifying methods by which progress can be measured. The information gained through evaluation is key, as it enables management to understand the effectiveness of a training program, and assists the trainer to identify elements for implementation in future program design. In this course students will review program evaluation theory, instrument selection and development, and report writing and presentation.

*Introduction to Training and Development can be waived for those students who have significant training experience.
Waivers are granted by the Director of the Division of Continuing Education.
