Funding Strategies for Nonprofits Workshop: Managing through a Recession
Jim Bildner and Andrea E. McGrath
LMGMT 5517
DATES: Tuesdays, October 6-20
TIME: 6:45pm-8:45pm
LOCATION: University Hall 4-037
TUITION: Non-credit, $100

Nonprofits are facing significantly reduced assets, and even greater demand for their services, while public and private philanthropic dollars are shrinking. As available capital continues to decrease, nontraditional investment options — including loans and other program-related investments —represent a significant opportunity to bring a fundamentally different approach to funding society's critical needs.

This workshop provides an overview of nontraditional capital investments and the benefits they can provide for funders and for nonprofits. We will discuss some of the key barriers that prevent the adoption and use of these funding strategies more broadly. We'll focus on program related investments (PRIs), and discuss how nonprofits can evaluate the appropriateness for their organizations, understand how best to structure and implement them, review these strategies with their management and board, and discuss these options with current and potential funders.

Meeting topics include: strategic planning as a key to success; increasing the impact of marketing; leadership and ethical gatekeeping; developing board members and volunteers. The primary learning components are interactive discussions related to specific issues and problems faced by a participant's organization, presentations and practical guidance by experienced faculty practitioners, and readings.

This workshop will focus on the use of Play, Art and Sandtray Play Therapies with children. It will provide state of the art information on our current understanding of the impact of interpersonal trauma on children's affective and social experiences. It is important to recognize that human beings possess intrinsic drives to heal. Clinicians, however, are also challenged to integrate evidence and practice-informed approaches to treatment. Clinicians will learn to respect children's phenomenological understanding of their world within the context of their developmental ages, cultural contexts and their play. This workshop will encourage a multi-modal approach to facilitate reparative experiences. Special emphasis will be placed on the processing of post-traumatic play. Case examples using Play, Art and Sandtray Play Therapies will be used to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach.

Objectives - Participants completing this workshop will be able to:

  • Describe three common aftereffects of interpersonal trauma;
  • List two complicating factors present in interpersonal trauma;
  • Identify two consensus areas for treatment issues to address in traumatized children;
  • Define Post-traumatic play and give two factors present in this type of play;
  • List two natural reparative mechanisms;
  • Describe what is meant by a person's phenomenological experience;
  • List two ways that Art can be used in the assessment and treatment of abused children;
  • List two ways that Sandtray Play Therapy can be utilized in the assessment and treatment of abused children.
