At the beginning of each semester, a mandatory orientation for new international students provides an overview of immigration regulations, academic life in the U.S., health and wellness, safety precautions, support services, student activities, and cultural transition and diversity within the university.
The Director of the International Student Services Office is available to provide support to our international students, as well as referrals to other resources in Boston. Through this office, international student activities and events are organized. The Director may be of assistance in helping to resolve problems concerning adjustments to student life, "culture shock", work qualifications, government regulations, and for answering all questions about immigration regulations, employment authorization and travel issues.
The Art Institute of Boston has a two-tiered advisor system to provide students with ongoing advice and academic counseling, and to lend guidance and support. Advisors are professional artists as well as teachers. In some cases, students have advisors who are alumni and working professionals in one of the fields related to their major. Students meet with advisors on a regular basis, and advisors are available to assist in making decisions related to the opportunities and requirements in programs of study and careers.
International students will be required to take a brief English Language Placement Test during orientation. Students whose test scores indicate a need for further preparation in English are required to take English as a Second Language, a 3-credit course which satisfies academic requirements for visa status, but may not be applied to graduation requirements.
The college provides tutoring services for students who need assistance with academic course work, adapting to college study requirements, writing papers, etc. In addition, the Center for Academic Achievement at the Cambridge campus gives individual assistance with writing, reading, math, study skills and English as a Second Language.
Many international students prefer to live in a dormitory while adjusting to their first year of art college. The University provides housing for students at The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. The dormitories are located near Harvard Square in Cambridge. A regular shuttle to AIB is provided. Please see the Residence Life website for more information on housing options.
