AIB photography facilities—labs, classrooms, shooting studio, and equipment lockup—are located in the lower level of 700 Beacon Street.

Photography Labs

  • wet/analog black and white film developing and printing areas
  • wet/analog color printing

Black & White

  • 2 black and white gang darkrooms (beginner and advanced)
  • 1 film-processing area with a double sided sink
  • 2 sheet film processing/toning rooms

Color

  • 33" automated TecPhot roller transport color processor
  • 15 private darkrooms
    • all equipped to print up 4"x5" negatives
    • 2 equipped to print up to 8"x10" negatives
  • Courier pick up/drop off from Color Services for film processing. Fees vary.

Alternative Process

A dedicated Alternative Process darkroom with a large sink and ample counter space allows students to explore a large variety of historical processes such as Cyanotype, Vandyke, Gum Bichromate, and Platinum/Palladium. Advanced students also work in wet plate Collodian under direct faculty guidance.

Equipment Available

Students have access to a large variety of cameras as well as lighting and studio equipment. 8"x10", 4"x5", and 2 1/4" film cameras; Nikon, Nikon, Canon, and Leaf digital cameras or backs; Profoto strobe lighting, a variety of tungsten lighting, supporting grip equipment, and light meters are all available for checkout.

Lab Access

The darkrooms are staffed by student monitors (photography majors in the BFA program) and are overseen by one full-time studio manager, one full-time assistant lab manager, and one part time lab manager.

The labs are open to all photo majors, any student currently enrolled in a photography course, and non-department majors who have taken and completed a photography course at AIB.

Hours of Operation
Monday-Thursday: 8am–11pm
Friday: 8am–6pm
Saturday: 9am– 5pm
Sunday: noon–8pm

The labs and lockup are open when classes begin and close the last day of undergraduate critiques. Holiday hours may vary; visit the AIB Photo Lockup on Facebook or the AIB Photo Lockup Twitter feed for an up-to-the-minute report.
