ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Sound, not unlike water, seeks to fill empty space. It enters, swirling, progressing outward and reflecting off surfaces, moving rapidly until it displaces the stillness, replacing the motionless air with living, pulsing, sonic vibrations. These waves of sound move air within the outer and then inner ear, creating a physiological reaction within the body and a corresponding emotional response.
Both temporal and impactful, sound has unique qualities that make it a particularly fascinating medium to manipulate. Temporal in that it builds, enters and fades from space, leaving only memory, and impactful because it falls into necessarily open ears that channel the frequencies directly to the brain. Sound is not just heard. It is felt, both physically and emotionally, often provoking nostalgic and visceral responses engendered from long forgotten experiences.
My art-making is driven by always evolving interests: engagement with the soundscape and sonic space, opening sensory pathways and pushing limits of perception, and challenging the status quo of a privileged visual. I am also interested in the production of wonder - a childlike sense of discovery, and in the creation of beauty, meaning that in addition to the concept behind my work, there is clarity of its aesthetic motivation.
By re-contextualizing the sounds of natural and imagined worlds into sound compositions, installations, and performances, I seek to create, define and illuminate sonic space.
