English Language Learners
Multicultural Classrooms
A recent study by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics found that 10.8 million children between the ages of five and seventeen - 20 percent of the school-age population - speak a language other than English at home.
This suggests not only a strong career opportunity for teachers of multicultural classrooms, but also a responsibility for such teachers to enhance the performance of schools that have a great amount of language diversity.
Lesley's offers both a dual licensure Master's in Elementary Education and English as a Second Language program which includes two practicums (one for Elementary Education, one for ESL), as well as Optional Add License program that only has the Elementary Education practicum, while preparing teachers for ESL MTEL exam.
Both programs prepare teachers to better meet the needs of students in grades 1-6 who are emerging bilinguals by combining hands-on experience with the most current technologies and proven, research-based strategies to help ELL/ESL students make significant performance gains.
