Specialist Teacher of Reading (All Levels): Initial Teacher License

Master of Education (M.Ed.), on-campus or off-campus graduate program

Prepare for a variety of vital roles in advancing children’s literacy.

Learn to enhance the literacy of PreK–12 students who need regular help in reading and writing. Become effective in working one on one, in small groups, or in classroom settings. You’ll get a foundation in theory, and the skills and training in strategies and approaches that will position you for a successful career.

At Lesley, our specialist teacher of reading programs have earned a reputation for producing outstanding graduates.

Reading specialist. Reading interventionist. Literacy coach. Literacy coordinator. Staff developer. These are a few of the roles you’ll be prepared for when you finish this program. During your studies, you’ll take a variety of literacy and literature courses. Learn how to assess students to provide them with the appropriate instructional approach. Take language and writing courses, and a research course that allows you to dig even deeper into literacy issues. You’ll emerge confident in your skills and ability to make a vital difference for students who need your help.

On-Campus Option

Take intimate, face-to-face classes on our Cambridge campus and receive personalized attention and feedback from faculty who are experienced practitioners. Complete a semester-long student-teaching experience in a Massachusetts school, and graduate after approximately two years.

Off-Campus Option

Earn your degree while studying one weekend a month at our off-campus site in Wakefield, MA. Study with Lesley faculty and a small group of fellow students, and take one course at a time over an eight-week semester.

Student Teaching

Student teaching, a requirement of all Initial licensure programs, is an opportunity to apply new skills to an active classroom environment and receive feedback from your supervising teachers and faculty. All placements are in an appropriate Massachusetts school, and are set up through our field placement office.

Reading & Literacy
Dr. Valerie Harlow Shinas
Valerie built her expertise as a middle school teacher and building-level reading specialist. Her research centers on how digital tools are used to support literacy and learning. Valerie has published and presented extensively on literacy instruction and Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK), a system that helps teachers integrate technology into their teaching.
