About Us

Mission Statement

Lesley University's Women's Center offers a safe space for all students committed to gender equality, provides information, resources and integrates the academic, social and co-curricular aspects of the Lesley experience, and supports developing programs and events in the spirit of advocacy. The center actively works to eliminate barriers and to encourage participation. We work to ensure equal and full opportunity for all, regardless of sex, gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, background, religion, ability or age.

"Well-behaved women rarely make history"
- Laurel Thatcher Ulrich

Where We Came From

The Center is the result of careful planning and energy coming from the Women's Studies Resource Group, Women's Studies Steering Committee, the Lesley College minor in Women's Studies, and the Graduate Specialization in Women's and Gender Studies.

Women's Center Staff

  • Daphne Strassmann, M.F.A. is the co-Director of the Women's Center and co-Chair of the Women's Studies Steering Committee. She is a graduate of Lesley's LCB Bachelor's and MFA Creative Non-Fiction programs and an adjunct instructor in the Humanities Dept. In a previous life, she enjoyed twenty years as an executive director for Macy's department stores, became a buyer & manager for a Texas clothing designer, and owned a beloved toy store in Brookline, Mass.
  • Jennifer Bucolo is a freshman studying Global Issues and Sociology. Interactions among differing groups of people have always been interesting for Jen to observe as she tries to identify various cultural universals they share. Applying these concepts to a college setting are difficult to bring to the forefront. Jenn encourages all students at Lesley to come and visit the center. "The Women's Center is a calming place where minds are sparked and people are connected."
  • Jennifer Sherys-Rivets Is entering her sophomore year at Lesley. Her area of study is Global Studies and Environmental Sciences. She enjoys traveling and immersing herself into cultures in order to learn about them, instead of just reading from a text book. Recently she has been interested in community development in the developing world, and women's roles in  developing societies. She enjoys working for the Women's Center because she believes it is crucial for a campus to have a space where gender equality is a priority and likes being a resource to all different types of people on campus.

Co-Directors and Steering Committee

The Women's Center is under the direction of two co-directors and an active steering committee comprised of faculty members specializing in Women's Studies and university members of the Lesley and AIB communities.

What We Offer
