Donald D.Deshler is the Director of the Center for Research on Learning at the University of Kansas and author of numerous books and articles on instructional interventions for learners at-risk for academic failure. His most recent article is "What we need to know about responsiveness to intervention (and shouldn't be afraid to ask)."

Navigating the Transition Planning Process: A Workshop for Parents and Youth with Disabilities

Your teen is turning 16 and, as part of IEP development, is due to start planning for life beyond high school. Be an informed consumer - know your role and what to expect! This presentation will describe transition planning, as mandated under IDEA 2004, and will help you and your son or daughter to get ready for and participate in the process. Strategies to foster self-advocacy skills in preparing for independent adulthood will be discussed.

Dr. Arlyn RoffmanDr. Arlyn Roffman is a licensed psychologist and Professor of Special Education at Lesley University in Cambridge MA. She is the author of numerous articles and chapters on learning disabilities. Her new book, Guiding Teens with Learning Disabilities: Navigating the Transition from High School to Adulthood, which will be published by Random House this fall.

Protecting Students from Harassment, Bullying, and Hate Crimes in Schools

This two-hour forum will explore the increasing problem of harassment, bullying, and hate crimes in K-12 schools and in cyberspace. The presenter will identify challenges to student learning that are associated with unsafe schools. He will highlight common mistakes and issues contributing to school conflict, incidents of violence, and various forms of inter-group tensions in schools. Participants will be provided with basic strategies for recognizing, responding to, and preventing bullying, hate crimes, and harassment and for providing a welcoming and respectful school climate conducive to learning.

Richard Cole, Esq.Richard Cole, Esq. is a former Assistant Attorney General and Civil Rights Division Chief in the Massachusetts Office of Attorney General with extensive experience in law enforcement, race relations, educational equity, and in addressing harassment and hate crimes in schools.

Identifying Characteristics of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

The discussion will focus on how to identify children at risk of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), methods of diagnosis and treatment, and what is known about the long-term outcomes for these children. Classroom management strategies and educational accommodations for children with ADHD will be addressed.

Michael Ching, MD, MPH, is a developmental-behavioral pediatrics fellow with interests in ADHD identification and cultural aspects of developmental disabilities.

Eugenia Chan, MD, MPH, is a developmental-behavioral pediatrician and health services researcher with a special interest in disparities and quality of care for children with ADHD.

Michael Neessen, PsyD, is a psychologist specializing in dyslexia, learning disabilities, ADHD, and the neuropsychological issues of children with medical conditions. All three doctors are associated with the Developmental Medicine Center at Children's Hospital in Boston.
