YOUTH PROGRAMS IN THE GREATER BOSTON AREA
Organizes high school students across the Boston metropolitan area into a cross class and mutli-racial advocacy organization. The have units in some 22 high schools from suburbs to inner city and have taken on such issues as reopening recreational facilities, extending the hours of public transportation passes, cleaning up school facilities, student/teacher relations, and are now getting into quality of education. Suburban students are collaborating with urban students in support of their common and different concerns and much of the foundational work has been done through communities of faith - from Pentecostal Christian to Jewish.
PJC holds a weekly workshop/meeting for group building and leadership development through discussions about the causes of violence including racism and sexism, skill-building in the areas of community organizing and leadership, and provides exposure to the history and principles of social change organizing.
The City School is a center for civic education that develops leaders for long-term action on social issues. Founded in 1995 by Cathedral High School, Boston Latin School, and Milton Academy, The City School (TCS) operates "out of school time" programs that stress critical thinking and ethical reasoning in an experiential, interdisciplinary context. Our programs unite high school students from the full range of our society in an approach that combines three components: community service, academic study, and leadership development.
For 15 years, the Food Project has been bringing young people from the city and the suburbs together to make a difference in the lives of people in the Greater Boston area. Each year, a diverse group of sixty youths, ages 14-17, enter the Food Project's Summer Youth program and work to grow and distribute thousands of pounds of organic produce for people in need. For many, it is a first job, and working in crews of eight to ten, the youth gain invaluable skills of teamwork, accountability, civic participation, and communication.
During the seven and a half weeks, youth manage a 31-acre rural farm and over two and a half acres of remediated urban land, sell produce through two urban farmers' markets and a Community Supported Agriculture program, prepare and serve lunches in local soup kitchens and homeless shelters, and help some of Boston's top chef's prepare community lunches, where neighbors, youth, staff, and visitors come together to share the harvest. Youth also participate in four workshops each week, covering issues of diversity awareness, hunger and homelessness, sustainable agriculture, and personal reflection.
Girls' Coalition of Greater Boston is a diverse consortium of Boston-area organizations and individuals working together to encourage the healthy development of girls. We expand and enhance the quality of girls' programs by building a sense of community among the adults who work with, mentor, and parent girls.
The Home for Little Wanderers (The Home) is a nationally renowned, private, non-profit child and family service agency. It is the oldest organization of its kind in the nation and the largest in New England. Each year, The Home serves thousands of children and families though a system of residential, community-based and prevention programs, direct care services, and advocacy. The mission of The Home is to ensure the healthy emotional, mental, and social development of children at risk, their families, and communities. The Home for Little Wanderers serves over 10,000 children and families annually. Over 20 programs provide a safe and therapeutic environment for children who may experience emotional, behavioral, and educational problems.
Peace Games empowers students to create their own safe classrooms and communities by forming partnerships with elementary schools, families, and volunteers.
Work with young people in schools and communities to start GSA's, provide resources, education and advocacy.
Project HIP-HOP students have visited more than 220 schools, making presentations about the socially-transforming role played by young people in the Movement and in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, and the importance of youth involvement in the ongoing fight against racism as this century draws to an end. They have also created their own curriculum for high school students, and produce a youth newspaper, Rising Times.
TAGV is a youth-based program built on a strong ideology that encompasses the positive aspects of gang or group membership, family involvement, and personal achievement.
The mission of the Center for Teen Empowerment is to realize the potential of inner-city youth to build healthier and safer communities and schools. Teen Empowerment hires and trains urban youth, including at risk youth, to be community organizers.
Women Express works to increase economic and social justice in our society by empowering teen women through publishing communication forums such as Teen Voices magazine and Teen Voices Online. Through creating and using media, teens have the knowledge and information to better themselves, their families, and their communities.

Title IX Advocacy Project
The Title IX Advocacy Project, a youth-empowerment and educational/legal advocacy organization, works with young people and their adult allies to promote gender equity in middle and high schools in Greater Boston. The Project facilitates workshops, conducts peer-leadership training programs, provides education and assistance to young people and their families, develops age-appropriate and culturally sensitive sexual harassment policies for schools, and develops resource materials for young people and adults.
Yesodot is a lifeline for Jewish families challenged by disability. Yesodot maximizes potential and builds community foundations ("yesodot") for children and young adults by strengthening their families via a broad array of support programs and services. Yesodot members believe that strong and empowered families will lead to enhanced quality of life and greater independence for their loved ones with disabilities. Yesodot is unique in that its programs are family-centered and family-directed, and are based on the idea that families can best identify their own support needs.

Achieve Boston is a collaborative effort to help after-school and youth workers develop their professional skills and knowledge, advance their careers, and ultimately better serve children, youth, and families.

The DiversityWeb project is housed within the Office of Diversity, Equity and Global Initiatives at the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U). The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Global Initiatives (DEGI) sees diversity and global knowledge as essential elements of any effort to foster civic engagement among today's college students.
Educators for Social Responsibility (ESR) helps educators create safe, caring, respectful, and productive learning environments. We also help educators work with young people to develop the social skills, emotional competencies, and qualities of character they need to succeed in school and become contributing members of their communities.
The National Center for Fair & Open Testing (FairTest) works to end the misuses and flaws of standardized testing and to ensure that evaluation of students, teachers and schools is fair, open, valid and educationally beneficial.

Rethinking Schools began as a local effort to address problems such as basal readers, standardized testing, and textbook-dominated curriculum. Since its founding in 1986, it has grown into a nationally prominent publisher of educational materials, with subscribers in all 50 states, all 10 Canadian provinces, and many other countries.
Founded in 1991 by the Southern Poverty Law Center, Teaching Tolerance supports the efforts of K-12 teachers and other educators to promote respect for differences and appreciation of diversity.
