Peaceable Schools & Communities

Founded by a coalition of Boston-area educators and activists during the 1st Iraq War in 1992, Peaceable Schools and Communities maintains a vision of dynamic, democratic communities that are both academically challenging and socially exciting. Knowing that school climate has a significant impact on learning, the mission is to foster and support community and educational leadership rooted in the values of equity and social justice through professional development, consultation, research, and publication. We realize this mission by integrating personal, professional and political change through a holistic model that starts with the self, focuses on the roots of justices, uses collaborative strategies, and supports a model of leadership that is democratic and transformational.

Peaceable Schools and Communities envisions a global community free from violence, disconnection, and systemic inequity where inclusive, empowered learning that is rooted in the values of affirmation, consensus building, excellence, and equity is a reality for all members. As a result of the Peaceable Schools' efforts, educators, young people, and other community members will have the tools, knowledge and relationships to live out and generate welcoming, dynamic and interconnected communities.

To create peaceable schools and communities Peaceable Schools and Communities seeks to develop:

  • Knowledge ~ sharing conceptual skills and foundations for peaceable schools and communities;
  • Tools ~ developing strategies and skills to create and sustain peaceable schools and communities; and
  • Relationships ~ uniting individuals and communities to collaborate for peaceable schools and communities.
