peruvian amazon: tropical ecology & conservationWe will explore firsthand the amazing Amazon ecosystem of Peru and visit local communities in urban and frontier environments. A service project in Iquitos is built into the itinerary. We will take early morning walks and boat rides, night walks, day hikes, and trips to various ecosystem types, where we will see an enormous variety of plant and animal life and explore the ecology of tropical forests in the largest intact example left on Earth. Pre-trip meetings will occur in either face-to-face or electronic format, or some of both, and will be arranged to fit the schedules of participants. We will be staying at Explorama Lodge and Explornapo Camp in comfortable accommodations with great food and the best guides in the Amazon, and we will also visit the ACEER canopy walkway, which will take us nearly 1/4 mile through the treetops. We will visit a Shaman and his medicinal garden, a frontier medical clinic run by Dr. Linnea Smith, and local villages There will be an optional side-excursion to Macha Picchu.Students can earn 3-credits for CNSCI 2120.01: The Peruvian Amazon.
