Bali: Healing rituals & sacred ceremonies

August 3-16, 2006

Our focus on this journey is the healing arts of the Balinese and the beauty that abounds in everyday expression through art, dance, ritual, costumes and textiles.

We have the opportunity to take part in the colorful, moving ceremonies and rituals that the Balinese celebrate in joyful expression of reverence for their gods and for the beauty of the natural world. As a result of our leaders' exceptional connections, we are able to offer a truly unique opportunity to explore, from the inside, the secrets of this deeply spiritual island world including the opportunity to work with an array of healers and techniques.

Students can earn graduate or undergraduate credit or professional development points (PDPs). Non-credit option available.

Cost: $3795 journey fee (plus $200 Lesley University fee); tuition fees extra (if applicable)

Includes int'l airfare from Boston; hotels (double occupancy); two-nights homestay with local family; all meals (except 2 lunches and 2 dinners); leader; local guides; all performances, entrance fees and special spekers; transportation; preparation materials

Not included: Two lunches ($4-$7 each), two dinners ($7-$15 each); laundry; overweight luggage fees; additional sightseeing not on itinerary; tips to leader, guides, drivers (optional, yet customary, $25-$35 per person is usual)

An example of the type of healer we will visit:

The Balian

Besides visiting a western-style doctor when ill, the Balinese consult a Balian, a traditional healer. These men and women work in different ways: some mix herbal remedies; some create drawings of magical symbols to protect the wearer; and some, while in trance, communicate messages from the Balinese Hindu deities and ancestors.
