How to begin designing your own studies
At LCB the journey to design your own bachelor's degree begins with your questions. We ask you "What do you know?" and "What do you want to know?" These questions will help you to reflect on your life experience and all that you have learned until now. We help you to formulate statements about topics that interest you. There are many forums at residency and online where you can discuss the answers to these questions:
- With your program advisor when you enter as a new student
- In small groups with faculty mentors
- In the snack room with fellow adult students
- In essays and journals
- In online classrooms
During residency, as these questions are refined, you will enter into study groups with faculty mentors and peers and work these questions into study plans. During study groups, you will also discuss the professional requirements you wish to fulfill through LCB and/or pre-requisites that are necessary for your future or graduate school plans. Through these study groups and informal conversations at residency, you begin to outline a study plan.
Selecting a Focus
When you are accepted into the LCB program you will be assigned a program advisor. The program advisor works with you throughout your degree program. Together you assess transfer credits, make plans to earn life experience credits, estimate the time your degree will take to complete, and discuss the direction of your major/specialization. LCB students must focus 36 credits of their degree in a major or specialization. A thesis is part of this major/specialization and is the most focused part of your degree where all of your life experience and academic studies are synthesized.
