Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies
Human Development Major with Special Education Minor

This program develops the knowledge and skills needed by special educators across disability areas, academic content areas, and the grade span. The major gives students an in-depth knowledge of the entire lifespan, preparing them to be special education teachers who understand how to work with children and their parents and to understand the societal factors that lead to achievement gaps. The major also contains a focus on diversity and culture in the United States and involves students in discussions on the role and relationships between home and school, school, and society.

The minor prepares teachers to work with a diverse population of students with special needs and to become reflective practitioners. Strategies for inclusive learning, learning how to learn, new technologies, transitional planning, nondiscriminatory assessment, and classroom management and behavior support are addressed throughout.

Students will bring at least 66 credits into the program acquired through completion of an Associate's degree. Total program credits = a minimum of 120. Upon successful completion of all program requirements, students will earn a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies degree and be eligible for a Washington State Residency Teaching Certificate in Special Education.
