Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies
American Studies Major with Elementary Education Minor

This program develops the knowledge and skills needed to address the needs of all learners in grades K-8. The interdisciplinary major examines American culture through a variety of academic disciplines, and is intended to help students learn content depth while also making connections between disciplines. The program takes a critical pedagogical approach, equipping students with the ability to read and write critically, consider issues of power and justice, recognize bias and stereotype, value diversity, and examine environmental issues.

The minor incorporates differentiated instruction and the integration of theory with practice, along with classroom inquiry through professional development. Students develop content area instruction in English, language arts, social studies, math, science, and art.

Students will bring at least 66 credits into the program, acquired through completion of an Associate degree. Total program credits: 120. Upon successful completion of all program requirements, students will earn a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies degree and be eligible for the Washington State Residency Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education.
