Dual degree program:
B.S. in Human Services and
M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling

This dual degree program, which is offered jointly by the Adult Learning Division (ALD) and the Graduate School of Arts and Social Science's Counseling Psychology Program, combines the curriculum of the Bachelor of Science Human Services Program and the Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program. It is designed for adult students who wish to complete their Bachelor's degree while pursuing comprehensive training on the graduate level to support mental health counseling practice. Students may choose to focus their Master's level work on one of three specializations: Expressive Therapies, Holistic Studies, and School and Community.

This program requires two years of field placement. Students interested in this program first enroll in the Adult Learning Division's Human Services Major. Upon satisfactory completion of 94 credit hours, they may apply to the Graduate School of Arts and Social Science for admittance to the Counseling Psychology program.

Advising and Administration

A proposed sequence of admissions classifications, recommendations for registration and fees, and advising follow:

  1. A student applies through the admissions office for the Bachelor of Science in Human Services/Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program. The Adult Learning Division and the Counseling and Psychology faculty review the applicant's file for admission. In addition to meeting the requirements for admission to the Bachelor of Science, Human Services Program the student is required:
    1. to take the Miller Analogy Test (a score of 40 or better is expected);
    2. be interviewed and be approved for admission by the faculty advisor for the Counseling and Psychology Programs.
  2. Following acceptance into the dual degree program, the student is advised by the faculty of both the Adult Learning Division and Counseling and Psychology Programs. A Counseling and Psychology faculty advisor is the student's primary advisor, with the Adult Learning Division advisor overseeing the completion of the Bachelor of Science degree requirements.
  3. The student registers for courses in the Counseling and Psychology Programs and pays graduate tuition throughout the program.
  4. At the time of successful completion of the 168-credit program, a graduation audit for both the Bachelor of Science in Human Services Program and Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program is completed. The student will be awarded both degrees at the completion of the program.
  5. In the event that a student is unable to complete the program leading to the Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees, the student, with the approval of his/her faculty advisor, can request a program change to complete the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Human Services. The degree will be granted upon successful completion of: Liberal Arts Requirements (36 Credits), Electives (53 Credits), and Human Services Major (39 Credits).
