The Illustration minor offers a foundation in the conceptual and technical aspects of illustration as well as courses that provide an intensive education in distinct careers and skill sets.
The 15-credit Illustration minor is suited for students pursuing a career in the arts, or in media through the Business Management and Communications program. Once the core Principles of Illustration course is completed, students are required choose a technique-focused offering, including classes in traditional figure drawing, as well as mixed media and digital formats.
The elective component consists of nine credits, among a combination of 3 and 1.5 credit courses. These courses include study within professional fields, including marketing, publishing and journalism. Classes are also focused on developing specific skills in computer illustration and project management, and effectively transitioning to a professional career.
This course is a thorough study of the human skeletal and muscular systems. Students explore the complex issues of figure composition through lectures and drawings from the figure, skeleton and imagination.
The comic book is an art form that knows no age or social boundaries; it is a feature of popular culture that is present from museum walls to the newsstand. Students explore this visual, narrative art through historical perspectives and assignments. Issues of content, plot, character development, sequential narrative, and design are addressed. Techniques for creating compelling storyboards for a variety of outlets are also covered.
