TEACHER CERTIFICATION FOR EDUCATORS in ALASKA
Are you a current educator in Alaska and interested in learning more about the process to add a level or an additional field to your teaching license? If so, read more to help guide you through the process.
- You may add an endorsement in one of the following three options:
- **You may only add endorsements to a 5-year certificate
Option 1. Institutional Recommendation: To add an endorsement in a content area and/or developmental level, have your preparing institution (Lesley University) complete the Institutional Recommendation form. You must also include official transcripts showing all coursework pertaining to the endorsement program completed. This is the only way to add new grade levels to your certificate.
Option 2. Posted Degree, Major, or Minor: To add an endorsement in a content area, submit official transcripts with a posted degree (doctorate, master’s, or bachelor’s degree with a posted major) or a posted minor (of at least 18 semester hours) in the content area. Grade levels may not be added to your certificate in this way.
Option 3. Praxis II scores: You may submit passing Praxis II scores to add an endorsement in any of the five content areas: English, Math, General Science, French, or German. You must have your passing scores sent to the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development directly from Educational Testing Services. Call (609) 771-7395 or visit www.ets.org to contact ETS. You must submit passing Praxis II scores in all of the tests listed under each content area in order to qualify for the endorsement. Grade levels may not be added to your certificate in this way.
Endorsements Earned Through Institutional Recommendation or Content Testing
- An educator may obtain an Alaska endorsement in the areas listed below by successfully completing the corresponding Lesley program and by following Option 1 or 3, detailed above. If following Option 1, applicants should submit to the Alaska teacher licensing office your completed Institutional Recommendation form, official transcripts, and add-on endorsement application. If following Option 3, applicants should have passing scores sent directly to the Alaska teacher licensing office.
