School administrators and hiring managers across the country place a high value on Lesley-educated teachers; well over 90% of program participants who wish to teach find positions immediately upon graduation.
You can concentrate your study toward licensure in one of these five areas: Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Middle School Education, Secondary Education, or Special Education.
Your area of study can be extended through various specializations that enhance your marketability and efficacy in the educational setting. Students may also apply for acceptance in one of several dual degree programs, in which students can earn an accelerated Master’s degree. Students may also elect to minor in Education to gain an education perspective in their chosen field.
The instructional coursework for each program is designed to prepare you for teaching in a multicultural society, and it is based upon a process or a clinical approach. Throughout the Lesley curriculum, theory is combined with competency-based practical fieldwork with children and adolescents. Methodologies used include formal lectures, round table discussions and/or seminars, and cooperative learning groups. These are combined with collaborative student and faculty interactions to find solutions to the daily problems that aspiring teachers may encounter in their work with students.
Appropriate field experiences are arranged in the first, sophomore, and junior years culminating in an intensive student teaching practicum during the senior year. In this capstone experience, viewed as a synthesis of all that has been learned, students assume their greatest responsibility as future teachers.

Lesley’s education programs lead to initial licensure as a teacher in Massachusetts, and through an interstate contract agreement, students earning initial licensure are also authorized to teach in 49 other states. Students must pass their required Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) exams before they begin their senior practicum. To promote success, Lesley offers multiple supports such as MTEL preparation workshops, tutoring for exams, and coursework, which support the content of the exams. Note: All Education majors must carry a second major in an appropriate liberal arts content area.
