TEACHER CERTIFICATION FOR EDUCATORS in OREGON
There are various types of teaching certificates for an Oregon educator:
Initial I & II Teaching: Apply if you have a bachelor's degree and have completed an approved bachelor's or post-bachelor's teacher education program, but only if you can satisfy ALL other requirements, including measures of subject mastery, basic skills, civil rights understanding and recent experience. The Initial I Teaching License is the first stage teaching license and the Initial II is the second stage. Both are valid for the subject areas and grade levels at which the teacher is endorsed and authorized to teach.
Initial Teaching: Apply if you cannot satisfy all requirements for the Initial I Teaching License but have a bachelor's degree related to teaching at one or more levels in at least one specialty and have completed an approved teacher education program.
Continuing Teaching: An advanced teaching license that is issued to qualified applicants that have demonstrated advanced competency in teaching and who have taught for at least five years. This license authorizes the teacher to teach in the subject areas in which the license is endorsed and at the grade levels at which the license is authorized.
Basic Teaching: Issued to a qualified person who completed an approved program and applied for a teaching license prior to January 1999. The license required a bachelors degree and demonstration of subject-matter competency through either testing or coursework.
Standard Teaching: Is issued to a qualified person who has completed an advanced approved teacher education program that resulted in a masters degree or equivalent and has taught on a Basic Teaching License for at least three years half-time or more.
Five-Year Teaching: Valid only in the specific subject in which it is endorsed.
Should you have additional questions regarding educator certification, contact the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission.
