TEACHER CERTIFICATION FOR EDUCATORS in IOWA
Are you a current educator in Iowa and interested in learning more about the process to add a level or an additional field to your teaching license? If so, read more to help guide you through the process.
Adding an endorsement to a license:
After the issuance of a teaching, administrative, or school service personnel license, an individual may add other endorsements to that license upon proper application, provided current requirements for that endorsement, as listed in 282-13.26 and 282-13.28, have been met. An updated license with expiration date unchanged from the original or renewed license will be prepared.
To add an endorsement from a non-Iowa institution, the applicant must follow one of these options:
Option 1: Receive verification from a state approved and regionally accredited institution that the Iowa minimum requirements for the endorsement have been met.
Option 2: Apply for a review of the transcripts by the Board of Educational Examiners’ staff to determine if all Iowa requirements have been met. The applicant must submit documentation that all of the Iowa requirements have been met by filing transcripts and supporting documentation for review. The fee for the transcript evaluation is $60 for each new endorsement requested. This fee shall be in addition to the fee for adding the endorsement.
Visit www.boee.iowa.gov for a full listing of Iowa teaching endorsements.
Endorsement Earned Through Direct Application
An educator may obtain an Iowa endorsement in the two areas listed below by successfully completing the corresponding Lesley program. Applicants should submit for review all official transcripts and application (for non-Iowa institution) to the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners.
English as a Second Language (K-12) - A student should complete the full 18-credit TESOL program.
Mathematics - A student will need to take at least 24 semester hours in algebra, geometry, number theory, measurement, computer programming, and probability and statistics. A course in the Methods of Teaching Mathematics is required in addition to the 24 semester hours.
Basic Science (K-8) or (5-8) - A student will need to take at least 24 semester hours in the following areas: Physical Sciences (12 hrs), Biology (6 hrs), and Earth/Space Science (6 hrs). A student could take Lesley's full master's program, along with the additional elective (36 credits total) to satisfy these requirements. A course in the Methods of Teaching Science is also required in addition to the full degree program. Note: The Science 5-8 endorsement requires the educator to already hold a middle school certificate.
Please note it is important that students interested in earning an endorsement through Lesley programs contact the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners prior to registration to ensure that you are informed of the certification requirements needed to receive an endorsement.
Authorization and Educator Licensure
Authorization: Lesley University is not required to seek authorization to operate based on Lesley's current activity within this state, as determined by the Iowa Board of Regents, which governs institutions offering distance education programs to Iowa residents.
Educator Licensure: Higher education authorization and educator licensure approval are separate entities. For more information on educator licensure, visit the
Iowa Board of Educational Examiners.
