| Ask-A-Librarian | Information service provided by Lesley Reference Librarians via phone,IM, email, and in person 360 days a year. The service is
primarily for current Lesley students, faculty, and staff. Questions from other
people will be answered if feasible. |
| Call Numbers | Each item in the library has a unique call number, including both letters and
numbers. These numbers come from the Library of Congress Classification System.
They enable materials on the same subject to be shelved together. |
| CashLynx | A prepaid spending account on your Lesley Card
offering a safe and convenient way to make purchases on and off-campus |
| Catalog | An index of materials in a specific library or libraries, now usually on
computers rather than cards. The Lesley University Library online catalog is
called the FLO Catalog. |
| Citation | Information that precisely identifies a book or an article; includes title,
author, page, date, and publication information. For guides to formatting
citations in your paper, check out the MLA or APA citation formats guides. |
| Consortia/um | A group of libraries working together to purchase materials and share them with
their users, often through a shared catalog. Lesley University belongs to the FLO and FLC consortia. |
| Database | Computerized information that may be searched by keyword, subject, author, or
title. Databases index articles, books, documents, and/or full-text articles.
Databases may be general, indexing a wide range of subjects, or
subject-specific, focusing on one subject area. |
| E-Book | Full text books that are available online through Library databases such as
ebrary, Ebsco E-Books, Credo Reference, and ACLS Humanities E-Books. Search for ebooks in the FLO Catalog. |
| FLO Catalog | The online library catalog for Lesley University and the 10 libraries of the
Fenway Libraries Online
consortium. The FLO Catalog contains: books, videos, teaching resources, tests,
and journals in the library collections. For individual

| Full Text (FT) | Designates links for which all of the content is available online. |
| ILL | Interlibary Loan is a service
for obtaining books and articles from another library that aren’t available as
full text in our databases; may take two to four weeks. |
| IM | Instant message refers to real-time text
–based communication over the Internet; see Ask-A-Librarian for Lesley
University Library IM services. |
| Journal | A periodical publication with articles written by professors, scholars and
experts. |
| JUV | Short for Juvenile; the JUV Room is located on the lower level
of the Sherrill Library and houses the children’s literature collection. |
| Keyword Search | Searching a topic using your own words. |
| Kresge | Kresge refers to the Kresge Library Media Center, located on the third floor of
University Hall. |
| Lesley Card | Your Lesley ID which uses CashLynx to pay for
photocopies, overdue fines, color printing, and library supplies

| LibGuide | Subject based research guides created by Library staff to bring together
resources and services available through the Library. | |
| My Account | Your online library account in the FLO catalog that allows
you to check on due dates for circulated materials and request books from FLO
member libraries. |
| My Library | A tab in myLesley that gives you access to all of the Library’s resources and
services (limited to Lesley University community only). |
| New & Noteworthy | A collection of selected recently-acquired books available for circulation,
located in the Atrium of Sherrill Library. For a complete list of all new
titles, please see our New Titles List. |
| Periodical | Newspaper, magazine or journal that is published on a
regular basis, once a day, week, month, year, etc. |
| Reserves | Faculty often place articles or books "on reserve" for students to check out for
brief time periods from the circulation desk at the library. This enables all
students to have access to the same item for a class assignment. Some material
is available electronically through the FLO Catalog. |
| SearchPath | This library tutorial was created to give Lesley students a good foundation in
academic library research. Six brief self-paced modules introduce peer-reviewed
journals, narrowing a topic, keyword searching, databases and catalogs, and how
to prevent plagiarism. Graphics were created by a Lesley alum! |
| Stacks | Stacks are the shelves where library books are stored. Students are invited to
go into the stacks to find books for themselves. |
| Subject Search | In the FLO catalog, a subject search uses Library of Congress Subject Headings
to find an item. Subject headings are listed in the Full Record for each item in
the catalog. |
| TRC | The Teaching Resources
Collection, located on the lower level of Sherrill Library;
primarily of K-9 instructional materials |
| URL | Uniform Resource Locator; the
unique address of a page on the World Wide Web. The URL for the Library Web site
is http://www.lesley.edu/library/. |
| VC | The Virtual Catalog allows you to search for
and request more than seven million items at over 300 libraries across
Massachusetts in addition to what you can find in the FLO
catalog. |
| Zines | According to Wikipedia, a zine (an abbreviation of the word fanzine, or
magazine; pronounced /'zi:n/ "zeen") is most commonly a small circulation
publication of original or appropriated texts and images. |
