As a Special Education major, you will gain initial licensure as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (PreK-8), and acquire the skills and strategies to become an effective educator in this high-need field.
You want to be a teacher, and more. You want to guide, mentor and reach out to a population of students with unique challenges and special needs. As a Special Education major, you will develop an expertise in assessment, curriculum design, and instructional techniques that cater to students with special needs. You will also acquire the skills that lead to successful collaboration between special education and general education.
Students in the Special Education major must also choose a liberal arts major to complement their professional studies. Students may choose from the following programs:
As a Special Education major you will gain classroom experience three times over the course of your program. You will complete a one-day a week practicum in your first and second year. In your senior year you will complete a semester long experience in a special education setting setting. These experiences will expose you to a wide variety of education settings, age groups, and diverse learning needs.
You will have the opportunity to pursue optional education specializations, which provide in-depth study in the teaching of specific curricula, subject matter, and/or populations. These specializations are designed to enhance your professional qualifications, but they do not lead to additional teacher licenses. These specializations include:
