The minor in Expressive Arts Therapy is designed for students interested in learning about the integrated disciplines of psychology and the arts in theory and practice, through music, visual arts, dance, drama, and creative writing.
The minor in Expressive Arts Therapy is unique in its broad, integrated approach to the client/therapist relationship, emphasizing the creative process in healing. Students will explore working with children and adults in diverse situations and settings, through academic coursework and experiential learning.
Students pursuing the Expressive Arts Therapy minor are required to complete 15 credits, with six credits to be completed through core requirements and nine through enrollment in arts courses. The arts requirement in the Expressive Therapies minor also involves students electing coursework in three of the following categories: Visual Arts, Music, Drama, Dance, and Creative Writing.
This course provides an introduction to the history, philosophy and theory of expressive arts therapy. Students will study the unique features of different media of creative expression: visual art, dance/movement, drama, creative writing, and music. The class will explore the integration of the arts in therapeutic practice. Readings, lectures, films and experiential exercises will be utilized.
This course will examine the history and theory of the integrated arts in expressive arts therapy. Through experiential learning, participants will explore the interconnected elements of image, movement, imagination, sound and rhythm. Further focus will be given to the application of integrating the arts within a variety of different human needs and populations.
