Welcome to Lesley University
With professors and students engaged in teaching, learning and research; libraries and art galleries teeming with new ways of looking at the world; student clubs and athletic teams providing opportunities for students to explore interests and improve performance; and students involved in internships and community service, the university experience challenges us to be totally engaged and develop the best in ourselves.
That’s my experience at Lesley, which is why it’s my privilege to be serving my seventh year as president. Lesley University is an institution dedicated to scholarship grounded in practice and learning rooted in experience. That dedication is reflected in the accomplishments of our 84,000 alumni, award-winning faculty, talented staff, and engaged students. Through this academic community, we continue our 105-year legacy of preparing individuals for careers that strengthen the lives of individuals, families, communities and organizations.
The engine of Lesley’s bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs is experiential learning, through which students test theory against practice and, in the process, become engaged citizens and lifelong learners. This begins in our small classes with close collaborative relationships between our students and our faculty. That experience then extends beyond campus through our location in Cambridge and proximity to Boston, both of which provide our students with an abundance of important and engaging internship opportunities that lead to socially responsible and personally fulfilling careers. This is one of the benefits of being a student in America’s premier college town. Our graduates build upon these experiences to become the educators and school leaders, environmentalists and entrepreneurs, visual artists and writers, counselors and therapists who create and improve schools, organizations and communities.
Our students, faculty, and staff also revel in the educational and cultural life of Cambridge and Greater Boston even as we deepen our influence in this region. A new arts center being built beside our Graduate School of Education in Porter Square will provide a new home for the Lesley University College of Art and Design, and for arts programming synergies across the university, serving as a hub of artistic creativity, with a new arts library, galleries, studios, and spaces open to the public.
At the same time, we’re making our mark on a global scale with innovative programs for teachers, counselors and caregivers, such as our Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences’ newly launched program in the South American nation of Guyana.
Lesley University cultivates individual excellence and community well-being, and remains true to the vision, principles, and efforts of our namesake founder Edith Lesley. Our growth and success today is testament to many dedicated individuals who remain excited – even awed – by the opportunity to make a difference through education, preparation, and commitment. We never take that for granted.
Something spectacular happens when people from diverse backgrounds and varying life experiences come together on a university campus to find their voices while also listening to the wisdom and learning from the example of others. That decision, that action, is often the first step in finding out who you truly are and determining your purpose. On some level, you feel this, or you wouldn’t have sought Lesley out.
Whatever your contribution is or will be, we’ll help you make things happen. I look forward to meeting you.
