Lesley University is committed to active learning, scholarly research, critical inquiry, and diverse forms of artistic practice through mentoring relationships among students, faculty, and practitioners in the field.
The Field Training Office works closely with students, placement sites, and instructors to facilitate each student’s learning experience. Placement sites include but are not limited to medical and psychiatric hospitals, community mental health centers, day programs for many populations, schools and afterschool programs, community centers, and more.
In addition to being supervised by expressive therapists, students generally work with multidisciplinary teams and receive supervision from licensed psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors, and other mental health professionals. A small-group seminar accompanies all field-training experiences to provide additional supervision and support.
Our 60-credit Expressive Therapies Master's degree programs are designed to support both counseling licensure and expressive therapies modality credentialing. The programs generally require students to complete 1200 total hours of field experience over the course of two, nine-month internships. In the second year of field training, students will accrue a minimum of 700 hours under the supervision of a Massachusetts LMHC Approved Supervisor.
>Counseling licensure is overseen by state boards of professional licensure. Each applicant will have to provide information about both their "pre-masters" experience (i.e. the internship hours and coursework you complete in your training program), as well as "post-masters" hours under counseling supervision (the work you do after graduation, but before attaining licensure). No pre-master's training can guarantee licensure in any state.
The Expressive Therapies Division's field training program requirements incorporate current "pre-master's" state requirements for LMHC licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. While the Massachusetts pre-master's counseling licensure requirements mirror those of some other states, students must be aware that licensure programs are a matter of individual state legislation and are constantly evolving. Lesley University makes no representation about counseling requirements in states other than Massachusetts. Students who will be seeking counseling licensure outside of Massachusetts are responsible for researching the requirements for that state.
