TEACHER CERTIFICATION FOR EDUCATORS in NORTH CAROLINA
Are you a current educator in North Carolina and interested in learning more about the process to add an area to your teaching license? If so, read more to help guide you through the process.
The Standard Professional 2 (SP2) Professional Educator's Licenses are intended for teachers with 3 or more years of teaching experience, and are valid for five years. Educators who are fully licensed and “Highly Qualified” in another state with three or more years of teaching experience in another state AND who meet NC's Praxis testing requirements (or have National Board Certification) are also issued the SP2 Professional Educator's license.
Educators holding a clear teaching license with no restrictions, can add an area to their license by taking and passing the Praxis II Test for that area, by completing a state approved teacher education program that leads to licensure, OR by completing 24 hours in the subject area with a grade of C or better. Educators holding a student services license must complete the teacher education program to add a teaching area to their license. Complete the application requirements for Update or Renew Your License.
Add-on Areas Earned Through Content Testing
The Lesley programs listed below will help you prepare for the test, and more importantly, to be a confident and effective educator.
Add-on Areas Earned Through Institutional Recommendation
An educator may add an area to the professional educator's license in the areas listed below by completing Lesley's corresponding program. A student should submit a completed Form V application and official transcripts to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Please note it is important that students interested in adding an area to their clear license through this route contact the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI) prior to registration to ensure that you are informed of the certification requirements needed to receive an endorsement. Should you have additional questions regarding your teaching certificate, contact the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
