Qualified students can spend a full academic year as interns in Cambridge, Boston, and Newton public schools. Year-long interns are able to complete all of their required field experiences for the initial license while earning a stipend and gaining valuable classroom experience.
Interns begin working in their schools before the children arrive in September, and they remain until the last day in June, immersing themselves in all aspects of classroom and school life. They become full partners in the classroom, working collaboratively with highly skilled teachers. During the fall semester, interns aid and assist in the classroom while they become familiar with the children, the curriculum, the pedagogy and classroom routines. Interns complete their practicum during the second semester, when the mentor teacher becomes the official supervising practitioner.
Our students have reported that, by the time they begin their formal practicum in the second semester, they are fully prepared to take on the planning and teaching responsibilities in the classroom. By then, their knowledge of the curriculum, the strengths and needs of the children, and the school's management routines and procedures add greatly to the value of their student teaching. Many students report that the internship experience also strengthened their candidacy for being hired in their first classroom teaching jobs.
