You have a passion for literacy, and want to meet the needs of all students. Prepare to do just that with this highly regarded Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree leading to Initial MA license for all grade levels. In the program, you will learn to:

  • Choose, administer, and analyze results from a range of assessment tools
  • Use assessment data to guide planning for effective instruction by specialist as well as classroom teacher
  • Foster the use of both traditional and digital text to enhance literacy across the curriculum
  • Consult and collaborate with classroom teachers, other specialists, and administrators

Key program information for the M.Ed. Specialist Teacher in Reading leading to Initial License:

  • Prerequisites: Initial or Professional license for classroom teacher or special education teacher and two courses: one in literacy and one in child/adolescent development (see program of study for more information)
  • 36 credits (11 courses, including a practicum)
  • Courses taken at Lesley’s Cambridge, MA, campus
  • Program may be used to move an Initial license in Early Childhood, Elementary, or Special Education to the Professional level
  • Program approved by MA Dept. of Elementary and Secondary Education
  • Meets International Reading Association standards

    SAMPLE PROGRAM COURSE

    EEDUC 6102 Language and Literacy: Development and Diversity

    This course examines diverse aspects of language acquisition and literacy development with emphasis on educational implications. The major theories and current research in first and second language acquisition are reviewed with particular attention to linguistic and cultural diversity. Educational topics in language and literacy are addressed, including concerns for reading, writing, oral language, phonics, spelling, academic English, grammar, language assessments, and language-based learning disabilities.
